Maersk has inaugurated a new integrated packing and cold storage facility in Olmos, northern Peru, aimed at strengthening the country’s growing agro-export sector. The facility is positioned to streamline the post-harvest process and maintain product freshness from farm to port, addressing rising global demand for Peruvian fruits.
The 17,500 m² logistics center is located in Lambayeque, one of Peru’s key agricultural regions. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), Lambayeque has become a leading contributor to national fruit exports, including a 35.7% increase in blueberry exports and a 29.2% rise in avocado exports in 2024.
The Olmos facility integrates packing, cold storage, and depot warehousing with Maersk’s global supply chain. It offers value-added services such as inland refrigerated transport, customs handling, and container depot operations. The site is designed to handle avocados, blueberries, and mangoes, and also provides cold storage for other seasonal produce like grapes.
The facility’s processing capacity reaches up to 38 tons/hour for avocados and mangoes, and 4.5 tons/hour for blueberries. It includes more than 4,600 climate-controlled storage bins, 2,088 pallet positions, and seven rapid cooling tunnels with 18 positions each. The site is equipped with automated packing lines, calibration and electronic sorting systems, as well as Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools.
To support Maersk’s 2040 decarbonization goals, the site uses electrified equipment and an on-site water treatment system. Solar panels will be installed in 2026 to increase renewable energy use.
“With the advanced systems in place here in Olmos, we’re able to minimize fruit loss and damage by at least 10%, helping our customers protect both product value and reputation,” said Juan Eduardo Ritz, Regional Head of Cold Chain Storage for Maersk Contract Logistics in Latin America.
