ORBCOMM launches CrewView for onboard container monitoring

ORBCOMM has introduced CrewView, an onboard visibility solution that allows vessel crews to monitor and manage smart refrigerated and dry containers in real time during transit. The system addresses a key visibility gap at sea by enabling early detection of issues such as temperature deviations and power failures.

CrewView delivers instant SMS alarm notifications to crew mobile devices from ORBCOMM-enabled smart containers without requiring satellite connectivity. This onboard monitoring is complemented by vessel-to-shore data transmission for onshore visibility. The system automatically displays container loading and stowage data in interactive bay, row, and tier maps within the ORBCOMM Maritime platform.

The solution also supports API integration for data exchange with third-party platforms and devices, enabling alerts and visibility across systems. CrewView was developed using technology from Vobal Technologies, LLC, whose assets ORBCOMM acquired in May 2025.

“CrewView solves a critical blind spot in end-to-end container monitoring and management,” said Sameer Agrawal, CEO of ORBCOMM. “By automating monitoring tasks, detecting issues early and enabling data-driven decisions, CrewView optimizes crew efficiency, helps to reduce cargo spoilage, enhances crew safety and provides visibility and transparency for customers—both onboard and onshore.”

The company reports successful pilot deployments across multiple global shipping lines, with measurable improvements in onboard response time and cargo protection.
