Daikin and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) have signed a five-year collaboration agreement to accelerate the transition to low-carbon heating and support the region’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.
The agreement, signed at the UK Pavilion during World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, builds on a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that focused on heat pump deployment, skills development, community outreach, and industry innovation. Greater Manchester, home to over 2.8 million people, is one of the UK’s most economically significant city-regions.
Under the renewed partnership, Daikin UK will chair Greater Manchester’s newly established Low Carbon Heating Industry Advisory Group, designed to connect businesses and policymakers in driving the region’s net zero agenda.
So far, the collaboration has led to the installation of 1,500 heat pumps and delivered nearly GBP 0.5 million (approx. USD 640,000) in social value through training programmes, outreach initiatives, and technology deployments. Projects have included curriculum development, skills bootcamps, and support for homelessness initiatives.
Looking ahead, the partnership aims to install 64,000 low-carbon heating systems across Greater Manchester between 2025 and 2030. It will also introduce a heat pump leasing offer to reduce upfront costs for residents and explore new deployment models as national support schemes evolve.
Daikin plans to open a new training centre in summer 2025, increasing annual training capacity from 1,400 to 4,200 people. The company will continue to support local communities, including through the Embassy Village project, and contribute to connected housing innovation via the 5G Innovation Region initiative.
Tomoji Miki, Managing Director of Daikin UK, said: “The MoU between Daikin and Greater Manchester Combined Authority has shown the power of collaboration. Over the past two years, we’ve advanced decarbonisation and tackled the skills gap crucial for the net zero transition. Daikin is committed to Greater Manchester’s 2038 carbon neutrality target and supporting the region through innovation and investment.”
