Industrial Heat Pumps: A Pathway to Decarbonization Supported by European Subsidies

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) emphasizes the critical role of industrial heat pumps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy efficiency across various sectors, including food and beverage, textiles, and machinery manufacturing. These heat pumps, designed to handle capacities above 200 kW and temperatures exceeding 100°C, present a pivotal opportunity for industries aiming to align with the EU's sustainability goals.

Industrial heat pumps address over 60% of the energy consumption associated with industrial heating processes, offering a viable solution for utilizing renewable energy. However, the high initial investment remains a significant barrier to adoption. Recognizing this challenge, European governments have introduced diverse subsidy programs to promote their integration into industrial systems.

Subsidy Landscape Across Europe

The EHPA’s report highlights various country-specific incentives:

  • Germany: Provides grants up to €20 million for renewable energy heat pumps and offers decarbonization bonuses for projects meeting emission reduction criteria.
  • France: Through the Fonds Chaleur, grants cover up to 65% of installation costs for heat pumps utilizing renewable sources.
  • Belgium: Regional programs such as Wallonia’s energy transition aid and Flanders' Ecology Premium+ support energy-efficient upgrades, including industrial heat pumps.
  • Scandinavian Countries: Sweden’s Klimatklivet initiative and Norway’s programs for industrial process optimization offer substantial financial support, encouraging innovation and efficiency.

EHPA’s Call for Action

The EHPA's 2024-2029 Policy Manifesto urges policymakers to:

  • Increase awareness about the benefits of large-scale heat pump applications.
  • Prioritize grid connections for industrial heat pumps to eliminate project delays.
  • Establish regulatory frameworks mandating the recovery of on-site waste heat.
  • Support research and development to innovate and scale heat pump technologies.

Driving Decarbonization and Efficiency

Industrial heat pumps not only aid in transitioning away from fossil fuels but also contribute to cost savings through enhanced energy efficiency and reduced operational expenses. Their role in achieving net-zero targets aligns with the EU’s vision for a decarbonized future, making them an essential component of modern industrial infrastructure.
