NASRC seeks signatures for changes that would lead to greater use of natural refrigerants.
The North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) has issued a call for signatures on a petition urging codes and standards bodies to expedite the revision of existing codes and standards to allow for greater use of low-GWP refrigerants in commercial refrigeration.
“The market is primed for a major shift to low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant use in commercial refrigeration,” said NASRC, a nonprofit focused on natural refrigerant adoption by supermarkets, in an email message linked to the petition. “Yet, slow-moving codes and standards bodies are holding us back from taking advantage of the many environmental and financial advantages of those refrigerants.
“We respectfully request that the codes and standards bodies that serve our industry review their process, procedures, and timing to reform them to better meet industry needs.”

The statement added that while revision cycles of three to five years were acceptable in prior decades when the pace of innovation was slower, “in this day and age, companies are launching new technology advances on a yearly basis.” The petition asks that changes to codes and standards “occur on a two year basis at maximum.”
The petition also asks for a mechanism “by which reassessment of existing codes and standards can be triggered outside of the existing cycles, to account for new technologies and scientific understanding.”
