UK Heat Pump Association backs mandatory training for flammable refrigerants

The UK’s Heat Pump Association (HPA) has published a new Flammable Refrigerant Training Policy statement, calling for all heat pump installers to be trained in the safe handling of both F-Gas and non-F-Gas flammable refrigerants.

The statement comes amid the ongoing review of the Great Britain (GB) F-Gas regulations and an anticipated public consultation. It also aligns with recent EU moves to introduce mandatory certification for handling flammable refrigerants.

The policy is supported by results from a recent ACRIB survey, which included HPA member companies. The survey found strong industry support for mandatory certified training for professionals working with flammable refrigerants in the UK.

Survey responses also indicated high awareness of existing qualifications, with many employers already offering relevant training programmes. According to the findings, the sector is committed to avoiding regulatory and skills gaps, particularly as policies shift towards low-GWP refrigerants, some of which are not covered by existing F-Gas certification rules.

Charlotte Lee, Chief Executive of the HPA, said: “Today’s publication demonstrates the strong support from the sector for levelling the playing field in terms of installer training and certification requirements for both F-Gas and non F-Gas flammable refrigerants. The HPA will continue to work with its members, stakeholders and policy officials to call for this alongside the expected review of GB F-Gas regulations.”
