The HVAC&R market in the EMEA region in 2015 (Europe, Middle-East and Africa)

Eurovent Market Intelligence (EMI), the European Statistics Office for the HVAC&R market, has published the results of its studies on 2015 sales in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, based on the data collected from a large number of industry manufacturers.

The increase in the number of manufacturers participating in statistical compilation for Eurovent Market Intelligence (EMI) continued into 2016, highlighting its role as leader in HVAC&R data.

Manufacturer interest in market data provided by EMI has proved consistent this year with 339 manufacturers from the HVAC&R sector participating in the collection of sales data from a total of 14 programmes. As such, they recorded a 5% increase in participation compared to last year, or 17% if the new residential air handling units programme are included.

This growth in the number of participants in data collection offers multiple benefits to industry manufacturers, since on the one hand it helps increase the reliability and the representativeness of the market data they receive, and on the other hand it improves their global understanding of the market through the broad range of products studied.

<h3>Historical growth in the number of participants in the 2016 air filters programme</h3>
The number of participants in the air filters programme increased by around 30% this year, a fantastic result for this programme which now includes 23 participants.

Manufacturer interest can be explained in part due to the increased detail revealed by this year's data collection. The latter was adapted to their expectations and offered segmentation by design type (bag, panel, v-type, filter mats, cartridges, media).

<h3>IT Cooling: Data collection even more representative of the sector</h3>
This data collection, which previously focused on precision air conditioning units, now takes into consideration several existing solutions for data centre and telecommunications cooling. Therefore, besides CRAC, EMI collects data concerning RACK, mobile TLC (units in telecommunications) and air handling units which are used for data centre air conditioning. Widening this format has paid dividends as 23 manufacturers have participated in the programme in 2016 compared to 17 in 2015. This confirms improved knowledge of the market, both in acceptance of alternative solutions and in the representativeness of the participants.
<h3>Cooling Towers: a leap forward</h3>
Regarding data collection for cooling towers, a new stage has been reached with the arrival of 4 new manufacturers. Traditionally comprising around 10/11 participants, there are now 15, comprising Baltimore Aircoil Company, Evapco, Jacir-Gohl, Mita, SPX, etc. This reflects almost the entire market in numerous countries.
<h3>Chilled Beams: Successfully relaunched</h3>
After being suspended for several years, statistical collection on chilled beams has been successfully relaunched, exceeding almost all expectations since it already brings together the 11 largest manufacturers in the sector and offers close to 100% representativeness. This allows the participants to better understand the evolution of the sector, particularly given the wide country dependent variations.
<h3><strong><em> </em></strong>Promising new data collection: residential air handling units (also called AHU or air handlers).</h3>
2016 has also seen the arrival of newly collected data for residential air handling units with 24 participants already. After such a promising start there appears to be strong potential for growth. Interest can be explained by the dynamic nature of this market and a data collection format adapted to the challenges of the European market. Therefore, besides the airflow and energy class, EMI is now collecting information on the type of on-board equipment, either at the level of the heat recovery unit or the compressor.
<h2>The HVAC&R market in the EMEA region in 2015</h2>
<em>Fan Coil Units
</em>

For the first time in several years, the market for fan coil units returned to growth in 2015, with an increase of around 10% for the European Union, or 1.51 million units for the entire EMEA region. Italy was the key to this growth, with a 20% increase for around 350,000 units sold, followed by other Southern European countries such as Spain, Greece and Portugal, representing some 117,000 units sold in 2015, with a rate of growth greater than 25%. Regarding Russia, we were not surprised to witness the market collapse to around half its previous volume, with sales of around 73,000 units; France and Turkey also saw their markets shrink this year (from -15% to -20%), then both stabilised at around 136,000 units each.<em>

<em>Rooftop units</em>

The market for rooftop units remained relatively stable in 2015, with around 8,900 units sold in the European Union. France is still the largest market, with approximately 2,565 units, but has dropped slightly, around -5%. Spain and Italy follow with 1,738 and 1,407 units sold respectively. They fared much better with increases between 10% and 15%. Same thing over for Turkey, which saw growth of 20% this year to reach a sales volume of around 2,200 units.<em>

<em>Chilled water production groups (Chillers)</em>

The market for chilled water production (whether cold, hot or reversible) exceeded 2.2 billion Euros in Europe in 2015, of which 352 million in Germany, 312 million in France, 257 million in Italy, 154 million in the United Kingdom and 130 million in Turkey. Overall, we saw a 5% increase in the European Union in comparison to last year, of which 16% in Eastern Europe, 15% in Italy and 14% in Spain. Sharp drops were observed in Ireland and the United Kingdom with -12%, as well as France and Germany with -3%. Outside of the European Union, the biggest drops were unsurprisingly observed in Russia and Ukraine, with almost -40%, as well as Algeria with -15%. Strong growth was observed in Turkey (+23%) and the Middle East: Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all increased by over 30%. India remained up with an increase of +15% in 2015.<em>

<em>The IT cooling sector</em>

The market is estimated at 32,300 units sold in 2015 in the European Union, including 63% of Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC), 20% of row and rack coolers, 16% of TLC mobiles and 1% of air handling units, but it is this last, more energy efficient segment, which is set to grow the most in Europe.

With regards to CRAC, Germany was the largest European market in 2015, with 3,711 units sold, closely followed by Italy with 3,463 units, then the United Kingdom and France with 2,864 and 2,631 units respectively. Concerning row and rack coolers, Germany led again with nearly 1,400 units, followed by France with 1,063 units, the United Kingdom with 768 units and Italy with 730 units. As for the TLC mobiles market, it is mainly concentrated in Italy with over 2,000 units sold in 2015, while Germany and Spain lag behind with 739 and 678 units respectively. The air handling units market for the IT sector is mainly located in countries with cool or temperate climates, with the United Kingdom leading with around 100 units, followed by Germany, Benelux, Northern Europe and Russia.

The air handling units market was worth 1.92 billion Euros in Europe in 2015, of which 393 million in Germany, 326 million in Northern Europe, 207 million in Eastern Europe, 149 million in Russia & CIS and 174 million in Turkey. While the market remained stable at the heart of the European Union, the sharpest falls were observed in Russia, where the market lost over one third of its value, in Northern Africa, where a similar decrease occurred and more surprisingly in the German-Swiss-Austrian triangle where a drop of around 10% occurred. Some of the strongest gains were observed in Eastern Europe, which fared well overall, demonstrating increases in excess of 10% in Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia. India also experienced double digit growth, as did most countries in the Middle East.<em>

<em>Air filters</em>

The air filters market remained stable in the European Union in 2015 at almost 900 million Euros, of which 232 million in Germany, followed by France with 128 million then the United Kingdom with 91 million Euros. The strongest growth, at over 20%, was observed in Switzerland, Portugal, Slovenia, Turkey and the Czech Republic. Results were lower in Norway, the Baltic states and South Africa, with decreases reaching as low as -20%.

<em> Heat exchangers
</em>

The heat exchangers market reached 980 million Euros in the EMEA region in 2015, representing a decrease of around 7% in comparison to 2014. Among the countries responsible for this decrease are Russia, which saw its sales fall by a quarter to 60 million Euros, and Eastern Europe whose total market reached 122 million Euros, representing a fall of 5%. Other significant decreases include that of Ireland (-20%), the Netherlands (-27%), Turkey (-10%) and finally Germany (-8%), which remains the largest market in Europe at 145 million Euros. The Southern European nations are among those which saw their market grow, with Italy leading with an increase of 24% for a market of 113 million Euros, then Portugal with an increase of 23% for a market of 6.5 million Euros and finally Spain with an increase of 40% for a market of 52 million Euros.<em>

<em>Cooling towers</em>

The cooling towers market reached nearly 223 million Euros in 2015 in the EMEA region. As expected, the main markets are to be found in Germany (€32m), in Italy (€18m), in Turkey (€17m), in France, in the United Kingdom and in Russia with respective volumes of around 13 million Euros. The strongest increases (in excess of 20%) mainly occurred in Northern Europe (Finland and Sweden), in Northern Africa and Central Africa, as well as in France. Some of the sharpest drops occurred in Austria and Germany, as well as Russia, Spain and Ireland and ranged from -15% to -25%.

<em> Chilled beams</em>

The chilled beams market reached 60 million Euros in Europe in 2015, of which 26 million in Northern Europe (the largest market), around 6 million in France and in the United Kingdom, and around 2.4 million in Germany and Italy. With a global fall of around 5%, it is mainly in France, Germany, Turkey, Spain and Portugal where the drop will be felt the most, exceeding -20%. Conversely, increases exceeding 10% have been observed in Italy, in Sweden, in the Baltic states and in Luxembourg.
