Danfoss launches new ETS 5T valve and upgrades ETS 5M for CO₂ systems

Danfoss has introduced a new electric expansion valve, the ETS 5T, alongside an upgraded version of its ETS 5M valve, both designed for CO₂-based refrigeration systems. The additions aim to give HVAC&R professionals greater flexibility when working with natural refrigerants.

The new ETS 5T valve is based on the compact ETS 5M platform and is suited for CO₂ applications ranging from 4 to 19 kW. It supports a maximum working pressure (MWP) of 140 bar and a maximum operating pressure differential (MOPD) of 120 bar. Operating within a refrigerant and ambient temperature range of -40 to 80 °C, it also allows for bi-directional flow. According to Danfoss, the valve's compact design makes it suitable for transport air conditioning, display cabinets, condensing units, and reversible systems.

The upgraded ETS 5M features a new bipolar coil extension that matches the performance of a unipolar coil while maintaining the same current. This coil also reduces heat loss, improving the valve’s lifespan. The valve is compatible with Danfoss EKF and EKE 100 controllers and supports an MWP of up to 49 bar and MOPD of up to 42 bar. With corrosion and vibration resistance, it is designed for harsh environments. It now includes 0.8 and 1.0 orifice sizes, making it a fit for residential heat pumps, cold rooms, and transport refrigeration.

Both valves feature ‘Clip & Turn’ installation and a bi-metal connector, eliminating the need to cool the valve body during installation. They are designed to simplify system design and lower applied costs by offering high MOPD in both directions.

The new ETS 5M is compatible with A1, A2, and A3 refrigerants and is expected to receive UL certification by the end of 2025.

“Our customers want reliable products that are easy to install and that comply with industry regulations, including the requirements for natural refrigerants,” said Mark Sever, Global Solutions Expert at Danfoss Climate Solutions. “With our new CO₂-compatible ETS 5T valve and the upgraded ETS 5M, we’re providing flexible valves that are ideal for air conditioning and refrigeration systems where reliability, performance and component size are the highest priority.”
