International Women’s Day: Promoting Gender Equality in the RAC Sector

In recognition of International Women’s Day 2025, efforts to promote gender equality in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) sector are gaining momentum worldwide. Countries such as Grenada, North Macedonia, Sierra Leone, Armenia, and Peru are taking significant steps to increase female participation in an industry traditionally dominated by men.

The RAC sector, also known globally as HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration), is undergoing transformation as more women enter technical roles. Breaking down barriers and providing access to specialized training is crucial for fostering an inclusive workforce.

Global Initiatives for Gender Inclusion

To highlight progress in gender equality, OzonAction produced a video featuring national gender mainstreaming initiatives conducted within Montreal Protocol projects. Various countries have implemented programs to support women in the RAC industry:

  • Grenada has prioritised training for female RAC technicians. One participant shared: “It is an amazing feeling to be part of a women’s team installing an air conditioner for the Minister of the Environment.”
  • North Macedonia has integrated a gender perspective into ozone protection efforts, involving women in training programs, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events.
  • Sierra Leone has seen female participation in the RAC sector grow from four women to 45 over three years, highlighting the impact of inclusive policies.
  • Armenia is developing strategies to address gender inequality, encouraging female enrollment in vocational schools and producing materials to showcase women technicians.
  • Peru provides specialized training in refrigeration, new technologies, and sustainable refrigerant management, contributing to both gender inclusion and environmental protection.

Addressing Challenges and Promoting Solutions

Despite progress, gender biases continue to hinder full participation. To advance equality, several strategies have been recommended:

  • Training and Mentorship: Developing technical training programs tailored for women and mentorship initiatives connecting experienced professionals with newcomers.
  • Visibility and Recognition: Showcasing female achievements in the RAC sector through awareness campaigns and public recognition.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between international organizations, governments, and businesses to create equal opportunities.
  • Education and Awareness: Integrating gender perspectives into RAC-related curricula to inspire young women to join the field.
  • Support Networks: Establishing women’s networks to facilitate knowledge exchange and professional development.

As the industry evolves, governments, businesses, and organizations are called upon to promote gender equality and foster a more inclusive workforce. By implementing these strategies, the RAC sector can move towards a future where opportunities are equally accessible to all.
