With the world experiencing its hottest year on record, the UNEP Cool Coalition is intensifying efforts ahead of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). Scheduled from November 10 to 21 in Belém, Brazil, the event will take place in the Amazon, a region facing critical ecological challenges. COP30 coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol’s entry into force, prompting reflection on climate progress and the need for urgent action.
At COP30, the UNEP Cool Coalition will collaborate with the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) to co-host the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion in the conference’s Blue Zone. The Pavilion will highlight sustainable cooling solutions and building decarbonization, following last year’s success at COP29, where over 40 sessions and 235 speakers discussed district and passive cooling strategies. The Pavilion will also feature new project launches, interactive panels, and the unveiling of the Global Cooling Watch 2025, a data-driven report outlining strategies to achieve near-zero cooling emissions.
A key event will be the second Ministerial Roundtable, bringing together representatives from over 70 nations and 60 non-state actors to review progress on the Global Cooling Pledge. The meeting will introduce the newly formed Intergovernmental Committee on Cooling (IGCC), designed to strengthen collaboration and accountability. The Annual Global Cooling Pledge Progress Report 2025 will also be presented, aligning with countries’ upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 3.0).
The UNEP Cool Coalition remains committed to reducing cooling-related emissions by 68% by 2050 while expanding access to sustainable cooling solutions. With Brazil co-chairing the Global Cooling Pledge Contact Group, COP30 is expected to drive policies, investments, and partnerships that support climate resilience and emissions reduction in the cooling sector.
