3 Ravens Brewery, an independent craft brewery based in Melbourne, Australia, initiated a comprehensive energy transition to support its planned production scale-up while aligning with long-term sustainability goals. In collaboration with Enex Technologies, the brewery replaced legacy R22-based HVAC systems with a fully integrated, high-efficiency CO2 chiller heat pump. This system was designed not only to address cooling and heating demands through a single, low-impact solution but also to enhance process integration and thermal energy management.
Main Results & Benefits:
The implementation of the integrated CO2-based chiller heat pump system is projected to allow an increase of 400% in production capacity without a corresponding rise in total site energy consumption. This is achieved through the strategic recovery and reutilization of waste heat, substantially decreasing dependence on conventional thermal energy inputs and improving overall process efficiency. As a result of these innovations:
· Specific energy consumption per unit of product is forecasted to decline by 76%, reflecting major gains in energy efficiency and system integration.
· Carbon intensity per unit of product is expected to decrease by over 75%, from 184 g CO2-e to approximately 44 g CO2-e per 250 ml of beer.
