Ghana is advancing its green cooling strategies to promote energy-efficient and eco-friendly air conditioning solutions. Key measures include developing a Qualification, Certification, and Registration (QCR) system for RAC technicians and distributing modern RAC tools, alongside comprehensive training programs.
Supported by Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with the GIZ SE4C project, these initiatives aim to accelerate the adoption of natural refrigerant-based air conditioners with low global warming potential.
The QCR system saw the creation of a draft legislative framework and standards for technician competency, developed with the help of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Stakeholder workshops facilitated decision-making for these initiatives.
Green cooling technology transfer includes distributing RAC equipment and R290 refrigerant-based ACs across four Centers of Excellence. Training programs were conducted in installation and maintenance, with 280 technicians trained overall.
Recognizing the RAC sector’s significant greenhouse gas contributions, awareness campaigns and stakeholder consultations were held to emphasize the environmental benefits of green cooling. Workshops, involving 75 participants, highlighted roles under the Kigali Amendments of the Montreal Protocol, promoting green cooling adoption in Ghana.
