Hybrid refrigerant pump configurations target lower energy and water use, while modular controls support resilient, expandable cooling.

Hitachi to Launch AIXROSS Air-Cooled Chillers for Data Centers in April 2027

Hitachi Global Life Solutions (Hitachi GLS) will begin accepting orders for its AIXROSS air-cooled chiller units for data centers in April 2027. The new system is designed to address increasing server density and heat generation associated with generative AI, combining cooling capacity with energy efficiency. It also aims to reduce water consumption, support stable operation, and accommodate future cooling infrastructure expansion.

AIXROSS will be available in a 2450 model with a rated cooling capacity of 245 kW (approximately 836,000 BTU/h), based on planned specifications. The lineup includes a standard version without refrigerant pumps, a Hybrid-M version with one refrigerant pump, and a Hybrid-H version with two refrigerant pumps. Each configuration is available with or without an integrated chilled-water circulation pump. The rated capacity is specified at an outdoor air temperature of 40°C (104°F), chilled-water inlet temperature of 30°C (86°F), and outlet temperature of 20°C (68°F).

The newly designed refrigeration cycle improves cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) at outdoor temperatures of 40°C (104°F). Hybrid configurations automatically switch between compressor and refrigerant pump cycles according to ambient temperature and operating conditions, with the aim of reducing electricity consumption during low-temperature operation. Hitachi GLS expects these features to contribute to lower annual energy consumption.

For installation flexibility, AIXROSS supports bottom air intake to reduce space requirements. Hitachi GLS also offers engineering services covering modular configurations that integrate chillers with piping, pumps, tanks, and other peripheral equipment. A high-speed startup mode reduces the time required to return to rated-capacity operation following a power outage. Integrated chilled-water pumps can also be connected to an external uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The modular system adjusts the number of operating modules according to thermal load, supporting stable operation under low-load conditions.

AIXROSS supports remote monitoring through Hitachi GLS’s exiida HVAC IoT solution, which requires a separate paid contract. The company also plans to introduce predictive fault detection and energy-saving controls using physical AI. The chiller will form part of Hitachi’s HMAX Data Center solution portfolio, which integrates AI-based operation, maintenance, and optimization across data center power, IT, and cooling infrastructure.
