UNEP trains female RAC technicians across Francophone Africa

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through its OzonAction Compliance Assistance Programme, held two regional events in Guinea on 8–12 June 2026 to strengthen cooperation on Montreal Protocol implementation and women’s participation in the refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector. The events were organized with the Government of Guinea and funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol.

National Ozone Officers from 20 Francophone African countries joined representatives of implementing agencies, the Ozone Secretariat, the Multilateral Fund Secretariat and technical partners. Discussions covered Kigali Implementation Plans, energy efficiency enabling activities, refrigerant life-cycle management, controlled substances banks, and national licensing, quota and data management systems.

A Regional Training Workshop for Female RAC Technicians on 11–12 June brought together 26 female technicians from 20 Francophone countries. It included knowledge sharing, practical demonstrations and a technical visit to a large cold storage facility at the Port of Conakry, while also supporting professional networking among participants.

The two events concluded with recommendations for stronger national capacities, improved data management systems, enhanced regional cooperation, continued technical capacity-building and greater participation of women in the RAC sector.

“By bringing together countries, technical partners and refrigeration professionals, we strengthen national capacities, promote peer learning and accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions,” said Yamar Guisse, Regional Coordinator for Francophone Africa at UNEP OzonAction.
