Daikin introduces DC-powered marine chiller concept at SMM 2026

Daikin will present a new direct current-powered chiller concept at SMM 2026 for integration with next-generation onboard DC power systems. The solution is intended for hybrid, electric and research vessels using architectures that may combine batteries, fuel cells, DC generation and renewable energy sources.

The concept combines Daikin marine chiller technology with a dedicated DC/AC inverter and pre-charge architecture. Direct connection to onboard DC distribution can reduce the number of power-conversion stages between energy sources and compressor drives, eliminate transformer losses and simplify power-quality management by removing selected AC conversion stages.

According to Daikin, the architecture can simplify electrical integration, reduce equipment footprint and support more compact HVAC installations. It is designed to give shipyards and system integrators greater flexibility when developing vessels with integrated DC grids.

Daikin reports more than 300 MW (approximately 1.02 billion BTU/h) of installed marine cooling capacity across cruise ships, ferries, megayachts, offshore platforms, diving and rescue vessels, research ships and other specialised projects. Its water-cooled marine chillers range from approximately 90 kW (307,000 BTU/h) to 9 MW (30.7 million BTU/h) and include inverter screw and centrifugal technologies.

Depending on project requirements, units can be configured with CuNi seawater condensers, roll- and pitch-resistant designs, corrosion protection, classification society certifications and onboard electrical configurations up to 1050 VDC. Daikin also conducts Factory Acceptance Tests before delivery, including witnessed testing with shipyards, owners and classification societies.
