The variable-speed systems deliver full heating capacity at 5°F and operate down to -20°F, with dual-fuel and smart control support.

Trane Technologies launches cold climate heat pumps for U.S. homes

Trane Technologies has launched its first cold climate heat pumps engineered and manufactured for the residential market under its Trane and American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brands. The new systems maintain 100% heating capacity down to 5°F (-15°C) and continue operating at temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C), while providing year-round heating and cooling.

The products are Trane’s 20 TruComfort Cold Climate Heat Pump with WeatherGuard and American Standard’s AccuComfort Platinum 20 Cold Climate Heat Pump with All Weather. Both support variable-speed operation and can also work in dual-fuel configurations for homes with furnaces.

The systems surpassed the performance requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology Challenge. Trane Technologies also conducted nearly 18,000 hours of field testing in homes in Minnesota, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Texas, where outdoor temperatures reached -21°F (-29°C).

Heating operation ranges from -20°F to 66°F (-29°C to 19°C), while cooling operation covers ambient temperatures from 55°F to 115°F (13°C to 46°C). The variable-speed compressor adjusts in increments as fine as 0.1%, and advanced airflow algorithms can deliver supply air temperatures up to 110°F (43°C). The systems are also designed to reduce reliance on backup electric heat.

Both heat pumps support Link communicating technology for integration with Trane and American Standard smart thermostats and indoor air quality solutions. Connectivity provides dealers with remote diagnostics and system visibility, while zoning is supported when the units are paired with Link-enabled indoor equipment.

“This launch marks an important step in making residential electrification practical for more homeowners,” said Mark Majocha, President, Residential HVAC, Trane Technologies. The heat pumps are available this fall and carry a limited warranty of up to 12 years for the compressor and up to 10 years for the outdoor coil and parts with registration.
