Constellation opens expanded cold store in UK with 36,000 new pallet spaces

Constellation Cold Logistics has opened an expanded cold storage facility in Grimsby, United Kingdom, adding 36,000 pallet positions of frozen storage. The expansion increases the site’s total capacity to 50,000 pallet spaces and is part of a broader strategy to enhance regional cold chain infrastructure.

The £47 million (approx. USD 58 million) project was supported by a £5 million (approx. USD 6.2 million) grant from the UK Seafood Infrastructure Scheme. It creates over 60 new skilled jobs and supports up to 1,000 additional roles in the seafood processing sector. The facility strengthens Grimsby’s role as a logistics hub and increases Constellation’s total UK storage capacity to 135,000 pallet spaces.

The 130,000 sq ft (approx. 12,000 m²) facility includes fully frozen loading bays and a 5,000 sq ft (approx. 465 m²) energy-efficient plant room. Operating below –18 °C with mobile and static racking, the site uses less than 30% of the energy per pallet compared to older cold stores. Solar PV systems contribute to a reported 50%+ reduction in Scope 3 emissions for customers, and the site is built to BREEAM Very Good standards.

The new capacity enables more seafood to be stored locally, reducing transport distances and emissions. Equipped with 20 dock doors and a Boltrics warehouse management system, the site is designed for high-volume throughput and full traceability.

Constellation plans further investment across the UK, including a new automated cold store in Wolverhampton. At the Grimsby opening event, Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, joined company leadership to acknowledge the project’s role in supporting local economic development.
