Greener Reefers publishes Spanish version of reefer transition paper

GIZ’s Greener Reefers project and the Kuehne Climate Center have made the white paper “Accelerating the transition to climate and environmentally friendly refrigerated maritime containers” available in Spanish. The release expands access for Spanish-speaking stakeholders and is intended to support broader participation in the transition to sustainable refrigerated maritime transport.

The white paper highlights the shift to natural refrigerants such as R290 and R744, which it says can significantly reduce direct emissions while maintaining technical performance comparable to conventional refrigerants. It also proposes solutions to eliminate PFAS and other persistent chemicals, which the paper says remain in water, soil and the food chain and pose risks to the environment and human health.

Energy efficiency is also presented as a central part of the transition. According to the white paper, innovations in insulation, temperature control and logistics can reduce indirect emissions from refrigerated containers by up to 20%. The document links these measures to international climate commitments, including the targets of the IMO and the Paris Agreement, and points to public policy and financing mechanisms as part of the transition.

The Spanish edition is aimed at a wider group of stakeholders, including policy makers, logistics operators, port authorities, manufacturers and financial institutions. The announcement said the launch is intended to remove language barriers, support faster implementation of sustainable solutions and strengthen collaboration in regions where refrigerated maritime transport is strategically and economically important.
