Maersk Opens State-of-the-Art Cold Store in Rotterdam
Maersk has completed a new cold storage facility in Rotterdam, enhancing its global network of temperature-controlled logistics solutions. The facility, spanning 35,000 square meters, aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of refrigerated supply chains for perishable goods, including fresh produce, proteins, and pharmaceuticals.

The first shipment received at the cold store consisted of fresh grapes from South African exporter Grape Alliance. "Our cold store significantly improves the speed and reliability in refrigerated supply chains, and hence the quality of temperature-sensitive and frozen products on their way to European consumers," said Ole Trumpfheller, Managing Director of Maersk Area North Europe Continent.

Strategically located next to the Maasvlakte II terminal, operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals, the facility enables smooth handling of reefer containers. The proximity to the terminal enhances supply chain integration and reduces friction in logistics processes.

With a capacity exceeding 34,000 pallet positions, the cold store plays a key role in Maersk’s reefer and cold chain logistics offerings for North-West Europe. Additionally, empty reefer containers can be returned to Maersk’s newly expanded Star Depot adjacent to the facility, potentially lowering detention and demurrage costs for customers.

The warehouse features a customs-bonded area, an in-house veterinary inspection point, and a low-emission design certified with a BREEAM Excellent rating.
