Marks & Spencer Introduces Hybrid Refrigerated Wagon and Drag Fleet in Collaboration with Gray & Adams

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has taken delivery of its first fully electric refrigerated wagon and drag vehicles, a major step towards greener logistics in the UK’s retail sector. Developed in partnership with long-term supplier Gray & Adams, the vehicles blend sustainability with innovative technology to improve the efficiency of food retail transportation.

The hybrid wagon and drag fleet is the first of its kind in the UK, featuring a fully electric Carrier refrigeration unit powered by the main engine of the prime mover. The drag trailer also includes a small diesel backup tank to ensure uninterrupted refrigeration, even in the event of an electrical failure, safeguarding temperature-sensitive food products.

Improved Flexibility and Efficiency

This hybrid model offers a flexible approach to food delivery, combining the operational range of conventional rigid vehicles with the environmental benefits of electric technology. The wagon and drag system allows for optimized deliveries, reducing carbon emissions and improving fleet efficiency.

Each vehicle can deliver to two separate locations in one trip - such as a Simply Food store at a BP petrol station and a larger airport-based store - replacing the need for two rigid vehicles. After delivery, the drag trailer can be left at the depot, where it is powered by an electric connection. Meanwhile, the prime mover can be reassigned for other deliveries, maximizing its use throughout the day.

Expansion and Durability

Marks & Spencer plans to integrate hybrid wagon and drag vehicles into 50% of its fleet within the next three months. Two vehicles are already in operation, with an additional 13 units scheduled for delivery soon. Designed for durability, the vehicles have an expected lifespan of up to seven years, ensuring long-term value and sustainability.

“These very latest wagon and drag combinations continue the partnership journey with Marks & Spencer towards its ultimate target of zero emissions,” said Andrew Brown, Sales Director at Gray & Adams Doncaster. “We continue to work closely with our partner to provide them with one of the most flexible, efficient, and carbon-busting fleets in the UK.”

This initiative builds on Gray & Adams’ long-standing collaboration with Marks & Spencer, as both companies aim to set new standards in food retail logistics and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The new vehicles will operate from key M&S locations and are expected to become a familiar presence on UK roads in the coming months.
