Thermo King Unveils Sustainable Cold Chain Solutions at Intermodal Europe 2024

Thermo King, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand under Trane Technologies, is set to present its latest advancements in refrigerated container technology at Intermodal Europe 2024, held in Rotterdam. At Stand B20, Thermo King will showcase innovations aimed at increasing efficiency, sustainability, and reliability for cold chain transport, emphasizing solutions that reduce food loss and carbon emissions across shipping, intermodal, and stationary applications.

Claudio Zanframundo, President of Thermo King EMEA Truck, Trailer, Bus, and Global Marine, Rail, Air, highlighted the importance of reducing the cold chain’s carbon footprint while ensuring the protection of temperature-sensitive cargo. Thermo King’s latest solutions reflect a strong commitment to advancing cold chain logistics in line with strict environmental standards and supporting customers in achieving sustainability goals without compromising reliability.

Key Innovations for Marine and Intermodal Transport

MP-5000 Controller

The MP-5000 controller, designed for Thermo King’s Container Fresh and Frozen (CFF) and Magnum Plus units, features a user-friendly, logic-driven interface with Bluetooth-enabled two-way communication for seamless operator interactions. Equipped with PT-1000 sensors, it ensures best-in-class temperature precision, supporting remote monitoring and energy logging to track kWh usage and CO₂ emissions. The MP-5000 delivers enhanced control, reduced costs, and comprehensive cargo protection.

TK Active Fresh – Active Controlled Atmosphere

The TK Active Fresh system, debuting at Intermodal 2024, is tailored for high-respiration cargo, such as fresh produce, in long-haul transport. Utilizing a nitrogen membrane, the system maintains controlled oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels, significantly slowing produce respiration. It offers rapid oxygen pull-down at 28 liters per minute with 95% nitrogen purity, as well as CO₂ removal at a rate of 90 liters per minute, extending produce shelf life and ensuring peak quality.

E-COOLPAC – Battery-Powered Reefer Solution

Thermo King’s E-COOLPAC is a flexible, battery-powered solution for refrigerated marine containers without grid access. Offering configurations from 35kWh to 105kWh, it provides an eco-friendly alternative to diesel gensets. Compatible with CFF and Magnum Plus units, the E-COOLPAC helps reduce emissions, meet regulatory standards, and minimize fossil fuel reliance, supporting a sustainable cold chain.

Additional Product Highlights

CFF Refrigeration Unit: The Thermo King CFF unit offers a set-point range of -30°C to +30°C, with precise temperature control and optimal performance on rough terrain and open seas. The CFF meets IMO power consumption logging requirements and supports low total ownership costs, making it ideal for customers focused on reducing energy costs and enhancing sustainability.

Advancer Intermodal Unit: Designed for rail, road, and short-sea transport, the Advancer unit combines fuel efficiency, temperature precision, and connectivity. Its compatibility with alternative power sources, such as Thermo King’s AxlePower energy recovery system, reinforces sustainable transport options. With telematics for real-time monitoring and the ThermoKare 24/7 Fleet Monitoring service, customers benefit from proactive diagnostics and continuous support.

Thermo King’s new and existing solutions underscore the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of cold chain technology, ensuring sustainability, efficiency, and reliability for the evolving needs of the transport industry.
