Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants 2022

The biennal Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants is once again brought back to Trondheim, the hometown of Professor Gustav Lorentzen and the cradle for the revival of CO2 as refrigerant.

Following up the successful conferences in Hanover 1994, Aarhus 1996, Oslo 1998, Purdue 2000, Guangzhou 2002, Glasgow 2004, Trondheim 2006, Copenhagen 2008, Sydney 2010, Delft 2012, Hangzhou 2014, Edinburgh 2016, Valencia 2018 and Kyoto 2020, the conference has become a globally important meeting place for more than 350 field experts from industry and research. The conference typically has 120 oral presentations in plenary and parallel sessions, more than 50 posters and world leading keynote speakers from science and government.

Conference sessions are planned, and paper are requested on subjects related to the basic engineering science, design and applications of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems, as well as heat-to-power cycles, based on natural working fluids, including:

The topics
  • Process, cycle, system and component development with natural refrigerants
  • Vapor compression systems: NH3, hydrocarbons, CO2 and water
  • Gas cycles and sorption systems
  • Heat-to-power systems
  • Applications
  • Fundamentals: Properties, lubrication, chemistry
  • Heat transfer fluids
  • Heat transfer and heat exchangers, compressors and other components
  • Energy efficiency, operational experience and economy
  • Safety with respect to flammable, toxic and high-pressure fluids

The theme put up for the conference is The Natural Choices by 2030. Currently the whole industry is in search for alternatives complying with the phase-down prescribed by the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Especially for A5 countries, conversion to natural refrigerants could be a possibility to leapfrog to long term environmentally safe alternatives. The conference should contribute to bringing forward solutions based on natural working fluids for applications within Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Heat Pumps and Heat Engines.

Substances such as ammonia, hydrocarbons, water, air and carbon dioxide are all naturally occurring in the biosphere. In contrast to new chemical compounds, the use of such fluids as refrigerants gives complete environmental safety and eliminates all uncertainty with respect to possible unforeseen effects. The strategy of replacing CFC, HCFC and HFC chemicals by natural fluids is now applied to an increasing extent by the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump industry, supported by several research groups and organisations.

The conference is organised by:

  • The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR)

  • SINTEF

  • NTNU
