Panasonic Corporation has announced that the cumulative global shipments of its nanoe devices have surpassed 100 million units. This milestone marks the extensive adoption of these innovative air purifying systems both in Japan and internationally.
The origin of nanoe dates back to the 1990s when air pollution became a significant issue in living environments. In response, research and development began in 1997 under Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd., focusing on utilizing water’s properties to dissolve odor components and purify the air. In collaboration with Dr. Kikuo Okuyama from Hiroshima University, full-scale technological development started in 2001. This effort led to the creation of nanoe—nano-sized particulate ions enveloped in water, generated by applying high voltage to moisture.
In 2003, Matsushita Electric Works launched the world’s first nanoe-equipped air purifier, Air Refresh. This was followed by the 2005 release of Panasonic’s nanoe-equipped hair dryer, ionity nanocare Windpress, showcasing nanoe’s unique features, including over 1,000 times the moisture content of negative ions and extended longevity. Over the years, nanoe devices have evolved and found applications in various products, including air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and beauty appliances such as hair dryers and facial steamers.
Reflecting the rising global demand for improved air quality, annual shipments of nanoe devices exceeded 10 million units in the fiscal year ending in March 2022. Today, nanoe technology is not only integrated into Panasonic products but is also widely utilized in facilities and public spaces worldwide. These include domestic railroads (16 companies), automobiles (115 car models from 9 companies), schools, hospitals, hotels, offices, and commercial facilities in 107 countries.
