Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has become the first airline to join the Move to -15°C global coalition. The coalition, initiated at COP28 in the UAE, seeks to redefine frozen food temperature standards and improve energy efficiency across the supply chain.
As a leader in perishable goods transport, Emirates will contribute its expertise in handling and shipping to this initiative. The coalition is exploring the impact of reducing frozen food storage temperatures by three degrees, potentially achieving significant environmental benefits without compromising food quality.
Emirates SkyCargo, which transports 900 to 1,000 tonnes of fresh food daily, has developed robust cool chain infrastructure. Although frozen foods are a smaller segment, the airline’s insights into logistics will aid in reimagining the frozen food supply chain.
Dennis Lister, Emirates SkyCargo’s Senior Vice President of Product and Innovation, emphasized the coalition’s potential to advance food logistics and deliver environmental benefits. Thomas Eskesen, Chairman of the Move to -15°C Coalition, welcomed Emirates, noting the airline’s pivotal role in the cold chain and the importance of cross-sector collaboration for ambitious climate action.
Founded in 2023, the coalition builds on research from the International Institute of Refrigeration and leading universities. Emirates’ participation underscores its commitment to sustainability and collaboration to tackle industry challenges. The airline also partners with the Aviation Impact Accelerator and The Solent Cluster to reduce carbon emissions and promote low-carbon fuels.
