Alfa Laval Expands Use of Low-CO2-Emission Steel in Heat Exchangers

Alfa Laval is ramping up its adoption of low-CO2-emission steel in its plate heat exchangers. Initially introduced in 2022, the company is now implementing this sustainable steel in one of its best-selling products, the T21 plate heat exchanger.

Starting this autumn, the T21 gasketed plate heat exchangers manufactured in Lund, Sweden, will feature SSAB Zero steel in their frames. This shift significantly reduces the CO2 emissions of these heat exchangers by up to 39%. The T21 model is versatile, handling duties up to a 10-bar design pressure across various industries, from clean hydrogen production to HVAC and heavy industry.

Alfa Laval's commitment to carbon neutrality includes actively reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and tackling the more challenging Scope 3 upstream emissions through innovation and collaboration. The partnership with SSAB, a key supplier for low-emission steel, is a crucial part of this effort.

SSAB Zero steel, produced in Sweden, is made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in almost no fossil carbon emissions. This sustainable material underscores Alfa Laval's leadership in incorporating eco-friendly materials in their plate heat exchangers, with ongoing efforts to transition other components to low-emission alternatives.
