Carrier Commercial HVAC has successfully completed a challenging chiller replacement project at the ArcelorMittal Orbit in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford. This iconic venue, designed by Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond, stands as the UK's tallest sculpture and a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, offering a panoramic view of London.
The project involved the installation of a Carrier AquaSnap 30RB 160R air-cooled liquid chiller with a scroll compressor and an additional De-Superheater for heat recovery. The new unit includes features such as a refrigerant leak detector, compressor soft starter, anti-corrosion protection, and frost protection for the water exchanger.
Carrier was commissioned by ParkServe on behalf of the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and partnered with L&B Technical Services Ltd for the installation. The logistical challenges posed by the 114-meter-high structure, with access restricted to a small hatch, made using a crane cost-prohibitive. Instead, Carrier opted for a strip down and rebuild strategy, dismantling the chiller off-site and transporting it in parts through the tight access point before reassembling it on-site. This approach not only saved costs but also maintained warranty integrity and Carrier's service standards.
Rob Moffat, Contracts Manager at L&B Technical Services, highlighted the innovative solution as a testament to their partnership with Carrier, emphasizing their ability to deliver complex HVAC projects. Hannah Barclay, Head of Contract Management at LLDC, praised the approach, noting the project's contribution to sustainable climate control at the venue.
The successful project at the ArcelorMittal Orbit showcases Carrier’s expertise in delivering innovative HVAC solutions, overcoming significant logistical challenges while meeting modern climate needs sustainably.
