Caverion to deliver Aalto University data center in Finland

Caverion will deliver a data center project for Aalto University on the university’s campus in Espoo, Finland. The project will convert a protected office and maintenance building completed in 1968, and an extension completed in 1982, into an energy-efficient and modern data center intended to safeguard the scientific computing capacity essential to the university’s research.

Caverion is responsible for the design and implementation of the data center infrastructure, including cooling, electrical, HVAC and automation systems, as well as the interior construction of the data center. The company will also supply the building automation system for control room operations and management of the entire data center infrastructure. The project will be executed under a design-and-build contract model, with Caverion acting as the main contractor.

The cooling system will use Fortum’s district cooling network as the primary cooling source and will include backup systems. According to the company, waste heat generated by the equipment will be recovered and used to heat other buildings on the campus. The facility’s overall electrical capacity will be about 2 MW (approx. 2,000 kW), which the source describes as technically comparable to a mid-sized data center.

“Caverion has a strong position in Finland as a partner for demanding industrial and infrastructure projects. Our company has participated in ten data center projects as well as dozens of other technologically advanced industrial and infrastructure projects that require exceptionally high safety and quality standards,” said Riku Mandelin, Head of Building Systems at Caverion.

Technical works are scheduled to begin in April-May 2026, with completion planned for February 2027. Mikko Hakala, responsible for scientific computing services at Aalto University, said the data center is an essential part of the university’s scientific computing and research infrastructure and that it is important for the facility to operate reliably, support high-quality research and function in a sustainable manner.
