Celebrating International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2024
On September 16, 2024, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, marking 37 years since the adoption of the Montreal Protocol, a landmark treaty that continues to protect the ozone layer and address climate change. This year's theme, "Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action," emphasizes the significant impact of the Protocol in safeguarding both the ozone layer and the global climate.

The Montreal Protocol, hailed as one of the most successful environmental agreements, has been pivotal in phasing out ozone-depleting substances (ODSs), contributing to the recovery of the ozone layer. Moreover, by eliminating these powerful greenhouse gases, the Protocol has slowed global warming, delaying the onset of critical climate events, such as an ice-free Arctic summer, by up to 15 years.

The 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Protocol has further accelerated global climate action. This amendment focuses on the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which, while safe for the ozone, are potent contributors to global warming. If fully implemented, the Kigali Amendment has the potential to prevent up to 0.5°C of warming by the end of the century.

Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, highlighted the ongoing need for global cooperation, stating: "The Montreal Protocol has set the stage for the full recovery of the ozone layer and has brought significant climate benefits. As we phase down HFCs under the Kigali Amendment, we also have an opportunity to enhance energy efficiency in cooling systems, doubling the benefits for the planet and people."

As of 2024, nearly 80% of the Parties to the Protocol have ratified the Kigali Amendment, marking substantial progress. Developed countries began phasing down HFCs in 2019, and developing nations are starting their phase-down efforts this year. This united action demonstrates the continued global commitment to protecting the environment and combating climate change.

On this International Day, the United Nations encourages all nations to strengthen their efforts in implementing the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment. By advancing climate action through the Protocol, the world can ensure a sustainable future, protecting both the ozone layer and the planet's climate.
