Clean Cooling Collaborative Champions Efficient, Climate-Friendly Cooling Solutions

As the world grapples with the increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves, along with the growing demand for cooling in urban settings, the Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC) continues its mission to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the cooling sector while expanding access to critical cooling solutions.

The CCC's Mid-Program Impact Report highlights significant achievements over the past two years and outlines strategies for scaling efficient, climate-friendly cooling solutions that align with global climate, economic development, and equity goals.

A Strategic Approach

In 2022, the CCC introduced a refreshed program strategy concentrating on four principal areas:

  1. RAISE - Elevate the profile and resources for efficient, climate-friendly cooling as an essential aspect of climate mitigation, development, and equity.
  2. AVOID/REDUCE - Minimize the need for mechanical cooling through better building design, urban planning, and passive cooling solutions.
  3. OPTIMIZE/IMPROVE - Enhance cooling technologies to be more energy-efficient, climate-friendly, and grid-friendly, and advance their deployment.
  4. INCREASE ACCESS - Expand access to efficient, climate-friendly cooling for low-income, heat-vulnerable communities.

While maintaining a global perspective, CCC has shifted its grantmaking focus to four priority regions: China, India, Southeast Asia, and the United States. These areas are projected to contribute approximately 75% of cooling sector-related GHG emissions by 2050.

Mid-Program Highlights

The collaborative’s implementing partners have made considerable progress, including:
  • Supporting the development and implementation of national policies to enhance the energy efficiency of cooling appliances.
  • Launching community-level programs to provide cooling solutions to those most affected by heat.

Since 2022, CCC's efforts have delivered significant benefits, securing gigaton-scale GHG emissions reductions by mid-century. The impact is monitored through 20 success indicators in the Results Framework Scorecard. To date, CCC has exceeded five targets, achieved three, and made notable progress on the remaining twelve.

The Road Ahead

The CCC network is fostering an environment where clean cooling solutions can flourish. While celebrating recent successes, the collective recognizes the need for increased efforts. The coming years will be crucial in accelerating the adoption of efficient, climate-friendly cooling solutions.

The CCC team, partners, and wider cooling community remain committed to enhancing awareness of extreme heat issues and the potential of clean cooling technologies. The focus will be on investing in high-impact solutions, fostering collaboration, and demonstrating the amplified impact of collective action, thereby building a future with efficient, climate-friendly cooling for all.
