CO2 transcritical use increasing around the world

Natural refrigerant CO2 is becoming more popular in transcritical systems in both food retail and industrial applications, heard participants in a sheccoBase webinar about shecco’s upcoming publication ‘World Guide to CO2 Transcritical Refrigeration’. With new technology developments continuing to improve efficiency, uptake of HVAC&R solutions based on natural refrigerant CO2 is growing in both food retail and industrial applications around the world, heard participants in a sheccoBase webinar last week.

Europe’s biggest manufacturers have recently reported equipping an estimated total of around 14,000 supermarkets in Europe with of CO2 transcritical (TC) systems, according to data collected by sheccoBase, the market development arm of shecco, publisher of this website.

This indicates that the total number of CO2 TC stores has increased considerably since sheccoBase’s previous estimate for the total European market in February 2018. Solutions that increase efficiency (parallel compression, ejectors, etc.) and integrated systems that meet the heating as well as the cooling needs of stores are an important factor boosting the uptake of CO2 TC technology among end users.

A sheccoBase survey among system manufacturers, component suppliers, end users, consultants and refrigeration contractors revealed that over 50% of approximately 220 respondents expect CO2 TC technology will dominate in new food retail installations, making it a standard technology for the future.

These updates were presented during a sheccoBase webinar held on 27 September in the context of the upcoming publication ‘World Guide to CO2 Transcritical Refrigeration’, which will set out current technology and market trends for these systems.

CO2 TC systems are also entering a wider spectrum of applications, like industrial cold stores and smaller convenience stores. More than 200 CO2 TC systems are known to be operating in industrial applications today, with more than 25 companies providing such systems to the industrial sector.

Webinar participants also had the opportunity to make recommendations on the scope of the upcoming report, to ensure that their questions are answered once it is published in 2019.
