Consultation Opens: Reducing the Climate Impact of Refrigerants in Australia

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water in Australia has announced the opening of a public consultation on options to reduce the use of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants in the commercial and industrial refrigeration sector.

The Department is exploring additional measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions through the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act (1989). The goal is to gather public input on effective strategies to minimize the use of high GWP refrigerants.

The options under consideration include:

  • Restrictions on the import and manufacture of new commercial refrigeration equipment using high GWP refrigerants.
  • Restrictions on the import and use of R404A.

Public participation is crucial in shaping policies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the sustainable development of Australia’s commercial and industrial refrigeration industry. The Department encourages individuals and organizations to contribute their views by:

  1. Reading the consultation paper
  2. Taking the survey
  3. Uploading a document with a written submission

Feedback must be submitted by 5pm (AEST) on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

For more details and to participate, please visit the Department’s website.
