EU Building Stock Observatory

EU Building Stock Observatory

The EU Building Stock Observatory (BSO) was established in 2016. It aims to provide a better understanding of the energy performance of the building sector through reliable, consistent and comparable data.

Web tool to monitor the energy performance of buildings across Europe.

The main objective of the EU Building Stock Observatory (BSO) is to provide transparent information on the EU’s building stock, to support the monitoring of current EU energy policies and measures and contribute to future policy making process.

The BSO is designed to include a database, a data mapper and factsheets providing interactive graphs and tables with data related to the EU building stock and energy consumption that can be visualised on-screen and downloaded for further use.

Ultimately, it will cover a broad range of energy-related topics and provide information on the building stock, energy consumption, building elements and technical building systems installed, energy performance certificates, nearly zero-energy buildings and renovation rates, but also areas like energy poverty and financing aspects.

The current version of the tool is a first step of a major revamping and covers only 3 domains:

  • building stock
  • renovation rates
  • energy consumption

In the near future, users will be able to visualise and download more indicators and relevant data.

How to use the BSO

Every set of data in the BSO database can be viewed per topic, year and country, or the EU as a whole. Once you have selected the indicators, the data is presented in summary tables and graphs, with references to data sources.

The BSO datamapper is using maps and graphs to present indicators and allows users to see the evolution between selected years and compare the related information and data between EU countries.

The BSO factsheets presents a snapshot of relevant indicators in at the EU and countries’ levels.
