European Commission online public consultation on EU 2030 climate ambition increase

The Commission invites all stakeholders and citizens to submit views on the EU’s 2030 climate ambition increase and on the action and policy design necessary for deeper greenhouse gas emission reductions.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission will put forward a comprehensive plan to increase the EU’s 2030 climate target in September this year. The plan will propose to increase the EU’s current 2030 target of at least -40% greenhouse gas emission reductions to at least -50% and towards -55%, compared to 1990 emission levels.

The Commission will also propose to put the new target into EU law, first through an amendment of the recently proposed European Climate Law, and later through sectoral legislative proposals.

Revising the current 2030 target upwards is to put the EU on a more gradual pathway towards achieving its objective to become climate-neutral by 2050. It also helps to pace and focus transition efforts from now until 2050 and ensure EU’s leadership role in addressing global challenges.

Increased climate ambition requires engagement and action on the ground by all economic sectors, citizens, authorities and the civil society. Policies must be designed in a responsible way, considering a socially balanced, affordable, just and knowledge-led transition.

Based on a comprehensive impact assessment and analysis of the national energy and climate plans, the plan aims to draw from the views, opinions and contributions by a broad range of stakeholders.

The 12-week online public consultation invites contributions on the EU’s 2030 climate ambition and on the sectoral and transversal action necessary to achieve deeper emission reductions. In addition, some more technical questions seek opinions on the specific EU policy design. We also welcome inputs in the form of concise position papers, policy briefs, sectoral roadmaps and studies.

The online consultation will be open for 12 weeks from 31 March until 23 June 2020.
