Heat Pump Certification Simplified Through Eurovent and ETL Collaboration

Eurovent Certification and the UK’s Energy Technology List (ETL) have aligned testing standards to streamline the certification process for heat pump manufacturers and simplify product selection for specifiers.

Since early 2024, the ETL and Eurovent Certification have worked together to ensure that Eurovent Certification test reports can be used to apply for the ETL, provided products meet its strict energy performance criteria. This alignment, already established for Evaporative Air Coolers, Professional Refrigerated Storage Cabinets, and Refrigerated Display Cabinets, now extends to five heat pump sub-technologies.

A More Efficient Certification Process

The ETL is a UK government-backed scheme listing around 8,000 independently verified energy-efficient products across 65 sub-technology groups. To be featured, products must rank in the top 25% for energy efficiency in their class. The scheme, backed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), helps UK businesses and the public sector choose greener energy solutions.

Eurovent Certification is a third-party certification body that verifies HVACR product performance through rigorous testing, factory audits, software evaluations, and data consistency checks. Many manufacturers already hold Eurovent Certification, and now, this certification can be used directly for ETL applications, reducing re-testing requirements and saving time and costs.

The five heat pump sub-technologies benefiting from this alignment include:

  • Air to Water Heat Pumps
  • Air to Air Heat Pumps (Split, Multi-Split)
  • Water or Brine to Water Heat Pumps
  • Water to Air Heat Pumps (Multi-Split)
  • Air to Domestic Hot Water Heat Pumps

For purchasers, this means increased confidence in selecting energy-efficient heat pumps that meet both ETL and Eurovent Certification standards.

Strengthening Heat Pump Visibility

Heat pumps are among the most searched products on the ETL, and demand for certification continues to rise. Eurovent Certification offers a portfolio of ETL-aligned heat pump programmes, including Eurovent Certified Performance, MCS (MCS007), and the NF414 mark.

Ian Butler, Partnership Manager at Eurovent Certification, stated: “Another milestone has been hit with the alignment of Eurovent Certified Heat Pump programmes with the ETL’s strict entry criteria. Creating synergy between ETL and third-party certifications such as Eurovent Certified Performance is vital, as it streamlines the ETL entry process while ensuring testing standards remain trusted, comprehensive and robust.

As a Government backed initiative, the ETL is a vital tool for manufacturers wishing to reach UK businesses and public sector decision makers. Likewise, the ETL removes risk for product decision makers, helping them identify the most energy efficient products to meet both decarbonisation goals and project requirements. By choosing products on the ETL that are also Eurovent Certified, specifiers and end users have double the guarantee of product performance and sustainability.”

Tom Lock, Consulting Director at ICF and Programme Director for the ETL Scheme, added: “We are delighted to expand our alignment with Eurovent Certification as this reflects the ETL’s commitment to remove barriers and make it easier for manufacturers to have their energy-efficient products listed, thereby offering greater choice for purchasers and specifiers.”
