Hitachi to Supply 3,000 VRF Units for Egypt’s High-Speed Rail Project

Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning Middle East and Africa, in partnership with Elsewedy Machinery, has secured a major HVAC contract for Egypt’s national High-Speed Rail (HSR) project. Hitachi will provide over 3,000 Eurovent-certified VRF indoor units, manufactured at its facility in Barcelona, Spain.

The HSR project spans 660 kilometers and will connect key Egyptian cities including Ain Sokhna, Alamein, Cairo, Alexandria, and 6th of October City. Designed to improve transport efficiency and reduce travel times, the system will serve 21 stations and is expected to handle more than 1 million passengers and 8,500 tons of cargo daily.

Hitachi’s contribution includes VRF systems delivering a total cooling capacity of over 11,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT). The systems are built for high ambient conditions and are tailored to meet Egypt’s climate and transportation infrastructure requirements.

Elsewedy Machinery will manage the full scope of HVAC works, covering supply, installation, copper piping, start-up, commissioning, and after-sales service.

Ahmed Aqel, general manager at Johnson Controls–Hitachi Air Conditioning MEA, stated: “Our partnership with Elsewedy Electric brings together global HVAC innovation and local execution expertise. By integrating high-performance European-manufactured VRF systems into Egypt’s high-speed rail infrastructure, we are supporting a new benchmark in sustainable, large-scale transport solutions.”
