The Institute of Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning Engineers (IRHACE) is reinforcing its commitment to raising HVAC&R industry standards through updated codes of practice and best practice guides. Since 2001, these resources have played a key role in supporting safety, energy efficiency, and technical consistency across design, installation, maintenance, and operations.
More than simple recommendations, the guides establish industry benchmarks for technical competency, professional conduct, and workplace safety. They help businesses and technicians minimise risks, ensure compliance, deliver reliable performance, and align with environmental goals.
IRHACE’s latest publications include the Code of Practice for Refrigerant Handling 2025, which reflects advances in refrigerant technology and environmental responsibilities. Other new or updated guides include the HVAC Hygiene Best Practice Guideline, the Industrial Refrigeration – Good Practice Guide 2025, and the Heat Pumps Good Practice Guide, each targeting specific technical sectors.
International cooperation is also central to IRHACE’s work. In partnership with AIRAH (Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating), the institute is developing a Commercial Kitchen Good Practice Guide to address foodservice ventilation and refrigeration. A Hot Water Heat Pumps Guide, currently in development with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), aims to improve performance and reduce emissions in domestic and commercial water heating.
IRHACE emphasises that continuous review and stakeholder input are critical as the industry evolves in response to climate targets, indoor air quality demands, and workforce changes.
“Whether you’re a new apprentice or a seasoned contractor, using these guides not only improves your daily work – it strengthens the entire industry,” the institute noted.
