Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, part of the Mitsubishi Group, has earned the Minister of the Environment Award for Climate Action 2024. The honor, awarded by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, celebrates the development of the JHT-Y/JHT-YI series of centrifugal chillers that use HFO-1234yf, a low-GWP refrigerant. The accolade, presented in Tokyo on December 2, recognizes excellence in technological development and commercialization.
This marks the third award for MHI Thermal Systems, following recognition in 2019 and 2021 for their environmentally-friendly technologies. The JHT-Y/JHT-YI series, launched in June 2022, are pioneering chillers in Japan with a capacity of up to 5,400 RT and use refrigerants with a GWP below 1, making them a sustainable option for air conditioning and industrial processes.
The series offers exceptional efficiency, with a maximum COP of 6.4 for the constant-speed model and IPLV of 8.8 for the inverter-equipped model. The chillers boast a compact design, facilitate significant energy savings, and cut CO2 emissions by approximately 65%.
HFO-1234yf, used in the chillers, is a non-Freon refrigerant widely used in car air-conditioners and vending machines. It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and is not subject to Japan’s Fluorocarbons Recovery and Destruction Law.
MHI Thermal Systems, a leader in Japan’s centrifugal chiller market, is committed to providing sustainable cooling solutions. This award highlights their dedication to innovation and contributions to global climate action.
