Midea Building Technologies (MBT) held a launch event on March 28 to unveil what it calls the world’s first full-process AI-empowered chiller lighthouse factory, located in Chongqing. The site has been designated a lighthouse factory for its intelligent manufacturing and sustainable industrial practices.
Lighthouse factories are recognized as global benchmarks for digital manufacturing and advanced production systems. MBT’s Chongqing factory stands out for its integration of artificial intelligence across R&D, production, and after-sales service. Operational since 2004, the facility manufactures large-scale central air conditioning systems used in airports, high-speed rail stations, industrial plants, commercial buildings, and data centers.
To meet rising demand for customization and address increasing production complexity, the factory has implemented machine learning, augmented reality, and AI-based platforms. These tools support intelligent design, agile production, and custom delivery workflows. Reported outcomes include an 81% reduction in chiller selection time, a 45% cut in product design cycle, and a 31% decrease in maintenance rates.
Since its launch, the factory has introduced several technologies, including China’s first inverter centrifugal chiller in 2006 and, in 2019, a magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller developed in-house. MBT’s centrifugal chiller sales rose from over 1,000 units in 2021 to 2,200 in 2023. The company holds more than 470 invention patents.
At the event, MBT also introduced a 6600RT water-cooled chiller testing facility. Jiang Li, President of the China Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association, presented the certification. The facility is designed to test performance and reliability of large-capacity water-cooled chillers.
AI technologies now assist engineers during chiller selection using simulation models and automated quotation tools. MBT's internal PLM system draws from over 230,000 historical blueprints to support intelligent design. Production areas for centrifugal compressors and heat exchangers are optimized with smart layouts, leading to a 30% efficiency gain and 15% cost reduction. Maintenance is enhanced through AI diagnostics and a mobile platform, reducing service complaints by 37% and warranty maintenance costs by 21%.
The Chongqing site also implements zero-carbon initiatives through energy management and carbon offsetting. Its central air conditioners are in use at international projects including Cyprus’ Mary 260MW power plant and Thailand’s Big C retail complex.
“From being a follower to an industry leader, MBT has always embraced the spirit of pioneering innovation and continuous improvement,” said David Li, R&D Head of Centrifugal Chiller of MBT. “We push our own limits to make complex technology simple for our users.”
