Munters expands data center cooling production in Virginia

Munters is expanding its Data Center Technologies factory in Daleville, Virginia, to meet rising demand for energy-efficient cooling systems in data centers. The expansion supports the growing needs of the US market, particularly as artificial intelligence applications increase the pace of data center deployment.

The project will add 200,000 square feet (18,580 m²) of production space adjacent to the existing facility, consolidating all local operations into one site. Munters will also build a new climate test chamber for chillers. Construction is set to begin in spring 2025 and finish by the second quarter of 2026.

The enlarged facility will enable domestic production of Geoclima’s chiller technology, which Munters currently manufactures in Italy. The Daleville site will focus on smaller cooling units such as Chilled Water CRAHs, Fan Coil Arrays, and Cooling Distribution Units (CDUs), while larger units like SyCool chillers and Air Handling Units will continue to be produced in the existing building.

“Munters has experienced strong growth in its data center business over the past five years, with new facilities in Daleville and Cork, as well as acquisitions in Italy and Thailand. To meet the expanding US market, we are enlarging our Virginia facility, creating a Data Center Technologies production campus. Together with our Texas facility, this will provide nearly 700,000 square feet (65,000 m²) of space dedicated to innovative, energy-efficient data center cooling systems,” said Stefan Aspman, President of the Data Center Technologies business area.

Cooling accounts for a significant portion of a data center’s energy use. The need for more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions is increasing, especially in hyperscale and colocation facilities. Munters’ range of products aims to help customers reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency.

The expansion is part of Munters’ broader strategy to grow its data center technologies footprint globally, following recent investments in Ireland, Italy, and Thailand.
