Poland's Move to Halt Recognition of Heat Pump Certification Faces Criticism

Poland plans to stop its consumers from claiming subsidies on heat pumps certified under the European Heat Pump KEYMARK Certification starting in 2025, sparking concerns over compliance with EU regulations. The KEYMARK certification, governed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), has assured the quality and performance of heat pumps across Europe for nearly two decades.

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) and the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat are urging the European Commission for intervention, emphasizing the decision’s potential to disrupt market access and increase consumer costs. The certification program includes over 9,300 models from 170 brands that meet European standards through rigorous testing.

"This decision could render thousands of heat pumps unmarketable in Poland, affecting both industry and consumers," said Tarik Bellahcene, Head of the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat. He criticized Poland’s move as counterproductive to its energy and climate objectives and harmful to the European sector’s integration.

Concerns raised by EHPA highlight potential conflicts with free movement of goods and quality standards harmonization, urging immediate talks to resolve the issue. With no formal response from Polish authorities after preliminary discussions, industry representatives stress the need for European Commission action to uphold market integrity and consumer choice across Europe.
