Spie Awarded Contract To Develop Cold Storage Facility For Newcold Advanced Cold Logistics

SPIE UK has been awarded a building services contract for NewCold, a specialist deep frozen warehousing and distribution global player, to support them in developing their cold storage facility in Wakefield, UK. The new build extension will dramatically increase the cold storage facility by 17,000 sqm. NewCold provides a total integrated cold chain logistics service for food manufacturers and retailers in the major European countries and the firm shares SPIE’s core values of developing world-class systems, energy efficiency and productivity. Building a series of state-of-the-art cold stores in the UK, France, Germany, Australia and Poland, means that NewCold is now able to provide their leading frozen food supply chain services to its international customers, including Unilever and Froneri. SPIE had the ideal expertise to fulfil the scope of work, which includes extending the existing infrastructure to provide one new HV/LV transformer, the installation of new primary and secondary switchgear, sub-main cabling, general and emergency lighting, new lightning protection system, HVAC, and domestic services. This contract was negotiated on a design and build basis and is valued at £1.5m. The Wakefield offer is based on a unique, innovative model that is different from the concepts that food manufacturers are used to. With this new expansion, the enlarged pallet capacity means the company will be able to respond to an increasing demand for high-quality storage from food producers in Yorkshire and surrounding areas. SPIE is supporting this development and the customer’s business growth objective with the works they are currently undertaking. Superior long-term performance in their facilities is a priority for NewCold, with market place examples operating continuously for 10+ years. Hans Vergouwen, Project Director at NewCold, commented, “We selected SPIE for this contract because of the team’s extensive experience and solid reputation for high-quality work. We pride ourselves on our world-class systems and we needed a contractor who could offer minimum disruption without compromising quality. We were looking for a bespoke solution and a contractor with local presence; SPIE offered both. Moreover, SPIE’s values are in alignment with ours, particularly in relation to mitigating impact on the environment.” Stephen Taylor, SPIE UK’s Operations Director North, commented, “We are delighted to be working with NewCold, an industry market leader, and hope this is the start of an ongoing relationship with the firm. SPIE’s international presence means that we can support NewCold in various locations where they operate, but we look forward to exploring further opportunities in the UK.” The works are scheduled for completion during January 2018 in time for NewCold to receive its first industrial block pallets.
