Trane Technologies launches BrainBox AI Lab for sustainable HVAC and building operations

Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator, has announced the launch of the BrainBox AI Lab, aimed at advancing energy optimization for HVAC systems in buildings and refrigerated transport. The initiative follows the company’s January 2025 acquisition of BrainBox AI, which develops autonomous HVAC controls and generative AI technologies.

The BrainBox AI Lab will focus on developing technologies to improve the intelligence, efficiency, and sustainability of building operations. It will serve as a center for research, collaboration, and testing, with work including autonomous control systems, predictive models, and algorithms designed to reduce emissions through smarter energy use. Areas of study will also include agentic AI and physics-informed neural networks.

According to Riaz Raihan, Chief Digital Officer at Trane Technologies, the lab will combine “world-class talent and industry-leading technology” to address growing demand for solutions that cut energy use, emissions, and operational costs. Jean-Simon Venne, President at BrainBox AI and Head of the AI Lab, emphasized the need for innovation to be both rapid and sustainable.

The multidisciplinary team will include software engineers, data scientists, AI researchers, machine learning developers, and AI engineers. Work will be guided by four principles: turning new ideas into practical products, collaborating with researchers and universities, embedding ethical safeguards into AI design, and developing technologies that support energy optimization and carbon reduction in line with Trane Technologies’ 2030 Sustainability Commitments.

Trane Technologies and BrainBox AI had collaborated for more than two years before the acquisition, combining AI capabilities with advanced building management and digital solutions.
