On September 24, 2024, a pilot version of the UK's first cross-industry Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard was launched. Developed by prominent organisations such as BBP, BRE, the Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UKGBC, this initiative aims to provide a unified approach to defining and proving the alignment of buildings with the UK’s carbon and energy budgets.
The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is designed to help funders, developers, designers, and policymakers build or verify that their projects are net zero carbon aligned. It provides consistent guidelines, ensuring accuracy in carbon claims. The pilot version contains the technical specifications on how buildings should meet performance targets, including limits on upfront carbon, operational energy use, fossil fuel avoidance, and renewable energy integration.
Over 350 industry experts have collaborated on the Standard, with input from more than 700 stakeholders during consultations. The Standard has been created using both industry data and top-down modelling to align with 1.5°C global temperature targets.
The pilot encourages the industry to prepare for the upcoming verification process.
