Vertiv Acquires Efficient Energy

Vertiv, the owner of Liebert-brand chillers and a leading provider of equipment and services for data centres, has acquired the patents and other assets of Efficient Energy GmbH. This acquisition comes in the wake of Efficient Energy’s insolvency.

Efficient Energy, a pioneering chiller manufacturer that uses water as a refrigerant, entered administration on June 2 following the collapse of talks with a potential investor. Despite efforts to find a backer, insolvency proceedings opened on September 1 at Munich District Court.

The company’s assets, including over 200 patents and rights to the technology, were subsequently acquired by Vertiv’s Italian subsidiary, Vertiv Srl. The details of the contract remain undisclosed.

Efficient Energy faced significant challenges in recent months, including an unexpected cancellation of a planned financing round. Despite these hurdles and a robust order backlog, the company was unable to secure a new investor.

However, the acquisition by Vertiv ensures the future of Efficient Energy’s groundbreaking technology. This technology is key for transitioning to clean cooling and heating. Notably, over 90 percent of chillers continue to rely on environmentally harmful F-gases, while Efficient Energy’s eChillers utilize water. As the world’s most efficient refrigerant and entirely safe and eco-friendly, water underscores Efficient Energy’s commitment to sustainability.

Former Efficient Energy MD Georg Dietrich expressed confidence in the future use of their technology by Vertiv Srl. The team at Efficient Energy extends their heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering commitment and dedication displayed throughout this challenging period.

The acquisition marks an important step in advancing eco-friendly cooling technologies and highlights Vertiv’s commitment to sustainability.
