World Refrigeration Day Celebrates Baron Kelvin's 200th Birthday

Today, the global community commemorates World Refrigeration Day, marking a significant milestone: the 200th anniversary of William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin's birth. Founded on July 9, 2018, this annual event unites industry trade associations and professional organizations worldwide to emphasize the essential role of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) technologies in modern life. The goal is to increase public awareness of how these technologies enhance daily living and contribute substantially to societal well-being.

William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (26 June 1824 – 17 December 1907), was a British mathematician, mathematical physicist, and engineer, born in Belfast. He served as the Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years. His notable work includes significant research and mathematical analysis of electricity, key contributions to the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and efforts towards the unification of physics. Kelvin was awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1883 and served as its president from 1890 to 1895. In 1892, he became the first scientist elected to the House of Lords.

Absolute temperatures are named in Kelvin units in his honor. While the concept of absolute zero existed before his research, Kelvin accurately determined it to be approximately -273.15 degrees Celsius or -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. The Joule-Thomson effect is also named after him.
