YORK, a brand of the Bosch Home Comfort Group, has successfully passed and exceeded the laboratory testing phase of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge. The company developed an all-electric 15-ton rooftop heat pump designed for cold climates, capable of delivering comfort down to -10°F (-23.3°C) while reducing reliance on electric resistance heating.
As one of eight manufacturers selected for this testing phase, YORK introduced a new rooftop unit (RTU) platform that supports both replacement and new installation applications. The system features simultaneous compressor and electric heating and includes a direct drive supply fan to improve efficiency and serviceability. The unit integrates with various Building Automation Systems (BAS), including demand response capabilities to reduce electric heat run time through remote control.
The RTU is based on the Choice platform, which fits approximately 70% of the existing competitive installed base, helping reduce transition costs. The platform offers multiple efficiency levels, from basic models to those qualifying for rebate programs.
“The DOE Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge has allowed Bosch Home Comfort Group to showcase our expanded engineering capabilities to support our strategic objective of innovation, efficiency and decarbonization,” said David Budzinski, Global Deputy CEO and President Americas, Bosch Home Comfort Group.
The YORK RTU will move into a field trial later in 2025 to evaluate its performance under real-world conditions in extreme cold climates.
