U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 636,302 units in February 2025, a 3.2% decrease compared to 657,509 units shipped in February 2024, according to data released by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).
Air conditioner shipments saw an 8.1% year-over-year decline, totaling 342,542 units, down from 372,897 in February 2024. In contrast, air-source heat pump shipments increased by 3.2%, reaching 293,760 units compared to 284,612 units shipped during the same month last year.
Despite the monthly dip, year-to-date (YTD) shipments show strong growth. Combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps reached 1,259,203 units through February 2025, up 10.8% from 1,136,883 units in the same period of 2024. Central air conditioner shipments rose 11.1% YTD to 689,899 units, while heat pump shipments grew 10.3% to 569,304 units.
“The continued year-to-date growth in HVAC equipment shipments, particularly in heat pumps, reflects ongoing market resilience and demand for energy-efficient solutions,” said AHRI President & CEO Stephen Yurek.
