The figure above highlights the regulations that global manufacturers of HVAC components are watching to understand where the industry trends in different regions are headed.

Developing countries like those in Latin American and the Middle East are quickly moving away from R-22 as they adopt the Montreal Protocol that the US and other developed countries have been abiding by for the past thirty years. The United States is in the last stage of the Montreal Protocol, so R-22 has been phased out since 2010 in new equipment. Following the conclusion of the Montreal Protocol, European countries will abide by the Kigali Agreement, an amendment to the Montreal Protocol that was passed in October 2016.The goal of the Kigali Agreement is to reduce GWP emissions, which many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have interpreted as phasing down high GWP refrigerants like R-410A, the most common refrigerant currently used in rooftop units. Europe will have a transition soon, as they have their own refrigerant legislation, F-gas, that was passed several years ago; the transition in the US will take a bit longer.
