Carrier Introduces K-Series WeatherMaker Applied Rooftop Units with R-454B Refrigerant

Carrier has launched the K-Series WeatherMaker Applied rooftop units, designed for enhanced efficiency and compatibility with regulatory requirements. The units use R-454B refrigerant, marketed as Puron Advance, which has a lower global warming potential (GWP) compared to R-410A.

Available in nominal cooling capacities from 20 to 60 tons, the K-Series offers improved indoor fan systems and higher efficiency compared to previous Carrier models. The lineup includes the 48K unit with gas heating and electric cooling and the 50K unit with electric cooling, which can be equipped with optional electric or hydronic heat. The design features a commercial-grade cabinet with fully hinged access panels, ensuring compatibility with most legacy Carrier curbs.
The K-Series is equipped with a high-capacity forward curve indoor fan with variable frequency drive control. It offers Staged Air Volume or Variable Air Volume configurations to support various application needs. Additional features include Carrier’s SmartVu controls with a 7-inch touchscreen, a refrigerant leak detection system with dissipation control, and factory-installed options such as an ultra-low leak economizer, modulating gas or electric heat, Humidi-MiZer dehumidification, and double-wall construction with an available Agion antimicrobial coating.

“Carrier’s K-Series rooftop units are the latest in a long line of flexible, efficient and reliable solutions for commercial air conditioning and indoor air quality needs,” said Michael Jones, Product Manager, Applied Packaged Systems, Carrier. “We’re helping our customers prepare to meet regulatory requirements while also designing our products to be efficient and innovative, all while offering easy installation and compatibility with existing curbs.”

The adoption of Puron Advance ensures compliance with upcoming environmental regulations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 lower-GWP requirements. With a GWP100 of 466 - 75% lower than R-410A - R-454B aligns with the phasedown plan outlined in the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The refrigerant also has zero ozone depletion potential, making it a sustainable choice for long-term applications.
