Daikin Applied has introduced redesigned versions of three HVAC systems - Trailblazer AGZ-F air-cooled scroll chiller, Maverick II packaged rooftop system, and SmartSource water source heat pump (WSHP) - featuring the low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant R-32. This transition is part of Daikin’s commitment to providing environmentally sustainable and efficient HVAC solutions for facilities across the United States.
R-32 refrigerant offers significant benefits, including superior full- and part-load efficiencies, reduced unit size and weight, and easier maintenance compared to other refrigerants. Jim Macosko, Daikin Applied’s vice president of product and sustainability solutions, highlighted the unique value of R-32. “We decided to reengineer our equipment specifically for R-32 to provide a range of benefits beyond the GWP value of the refrigerant,” Macosko said.
Trailblazer AGZ-F Chiller
The Trailblazer AGZ-F, optimized for R-32, features a 30- to 240-ton range and is designed for mission-critical buildings, data centers, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities. The redesigned model offers a smaller footprint, reduced weight, and lower refrigerant charge while delivering high part-load efficiency.
Maverick II Rooftop System
The Maverick II, a 30- to 50-ton packaged rooftop system, is now equipped with R-32 and factory-installed options such as energy recovery and modulating hot gas reheat. This integrated design minimizes installation costs and is suited for low-rise buildings like offices, schools, and libraries.
SmartSource WSHP
The SmartSource WSHP, available in horizontal and vertical 2- to 6-ton configurations, leverages R-32 for reduced refrigerant use and improved efficiency. Standard features like a two-stage compressor provide consistent air temperatures and low noise operation, ideal for schools, clinics, and office spaces.
Daikin has transitioned to R-32 for applications previously using R-410A, citing its two-thirds lower GWP, ease of maintenance, and proven track record with over 280 million units installed globally. The company emphasized that R-32 offers not only environmental benefits but also long-term operational efficiencies.
With this update, Daikin continues to expand its lineup of sustainable HVAC technologies, supporting the industry’s broader decarbonization goals.
